Join us for this special series co-presented by Girls, Inc.

Wednesday, September 7th, 6-8 pm: What is a Girl?
Presented by Dr. Claudia Allums
This lecture will explore the idea of the Greek Goddesses as the archetype of ways to perceive "the girl." Future lectures will build on the images of "the girl" from classic Greek mythology to consider how girls are characterized within our own cultural heritage.

Wednesday, November 2nd, 6-8 pm: Girls on the Big Screen
Presented by Dr. Scott Churchill
This program will explore various images of the girl depicted in film- from innocence to experience, from victim to victor. Film expert Dr. Scott Churchill will make an opening presentation and then lead a discussion with audience members.


Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 6-8 pm: What is a Girly-Girl?
presented by Peggy Orenstein
Writer and speaker Peggy Orenstein is author, most recently, of Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture. Having published numerous books, she is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and many other publications.


Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 6-8 pm: Girls in Science, Engineering, Math and Technology
This concluding program will consider the feminine role in scientific and theoretical fields, most if not all of which have traditionally been associated with men. How did such a tradition develop?In what ways is it changing? And what does the future hold for girls who are drawn to these professions?
