Being There: A Civil Rights Pilgrimage

Featuring Dr. Dennis Simon

Dr. Dennis Simon At a time when virtual experience is increasingly common, what is the value of actually "being there"? SMU Professor of Political Science Dennis Simon believes it can make a critical difference in preserving our individual and collective memories of key events in American history--specifically for him, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 1960's. For the past several years, he has conducted an annual pilgrimage to sites in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia that figured crucially in the struggle for civil rights in the Deep South. During this special event following the Institute's 5th annual MLK Symposium, Dr. Simon will present and lead a discussion of his own virtual pilgrimage in advance of the actual journey he will make in March 2010.
