Compromise and Commitment in the Making of the American Myth

Featuring Dr. Richard Beeman and Dr. Virginia Arbery

Compromise and Commitment Compromise is a key word in the lexicon of democracy, but have we lost the gift? Where are its origins in the American experience? Perhaps in the U.S. Constitution, which we rightly approach with respect if not piety. According to University of Pennsylvania historian Richard Beeman's Plain, Honest Men, the Constitution itself was the brilliant result of many compromises by the Founders--a process that Walter Isaacson calls "the most important, and also the most difficult, activity in a democracy." During this program, Prof. Beeman will speak about his most recent book and then be joined by Assumption College Professor of Politics Dr. Virginia Arbery to discuss the framing of the Constitution and its relation to the core democratic principle of compromise.
