Conversation, dialogue, civil discourse--all such exchanges of language and thought among people could appear these days on a list of endangered social habits. Or it may be that in our "age of distraction," we seem never to have--or take--the time to find a space where the simple gestures of listening carefully and speaking prudently are rightly valued. The Institute offers such a "green world" in its Friday Night Salons, whose monthly meetings aim at being a respite from the conditions that diminish the civilizing graces of community. We begin with good food and drink, then gather to discuss provocative topics proposed by the group and posted on the web at www.dallasinstitute.org. Submit your suggestions to lallums@dallasinstitute.org.
