INCREDIBLE WORLDS: THE STORIES OF JORGE LUIS BORGES

Dr. Bainard Cowan

Jorge Luis Borges

"Borges is the most important Spanish-language writer since Cervantes." Such judgments--this one from Peruvian novelist and Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa--are echoed universally among Latin American writers having practiced their craft within the vast shadow cast by Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986).

The Argentinian short-story writer, essayist, and poet stands at the threshold of the "Latin American Boom" of the 1960's and 1970's, challenging and tantalizing with his stories of dreams, labyrinths, libraries, ancient rites, and God. This class will explore the short fiction of Borges, who charts the early course of the "magical realism" that brought fame to so many of his literary heirs.
